A Hat is the most noticeable fashion item anyone can wear!
Necessity and fashion are the main reasons people wear hats. Hats have been used since antiquity in general for its practical uses of safety & protection against different weather elements & conditions all over the world and mostly as clerical & ecclesiastical head coverings for ceremonial & religious reasons. The Hats of a particular historical era, theme, style, festival or with a common purpose, are usually a good indication of the thoughts, culture and development of a society, place or event at a certain time.
The covered head shows nobility especially among royalty where some headgear, such as the crown, coronet, and tiara, have evolved into jewelry but also shows humility mostly in different religions as sign of respect for the superior authority of God, making oneself more open, humble or vulnerable, much like bowing or kneeling. Feathered headpieces, created from natural elements, has its origins from Native & Indigenous people and are mostly used for celestial & seasonal celebrations & festivals.
Hats & Headpieces come in all shapes & sizes and although it is noted in history as an indicator of social status, to single out certain groups or to represent authority & power, Hats are used today all over the world in everyday life mostly as as an art form, for decorative purposes & fashion accessory to complement the wearer's look and to contribute, in a secondary manner, to the wearer's outfit.
"Wearing a Hat versus not wearing a Hat is the difference between looking adequate and looking your best"
Over the years, Hats & Headpieces attained a fantastic number of shapes ranging from extravagant & flamboyant hats, immense confections and showpiece creations decorated with ribbons, flowers, feathers, and gauze trims, lace and accessories, created more as works of art than as practical items of fashion to no more than a few bits of cloth and decorations piled on top of the head to complete an outfit.
There is a link between ‘thinking’ and ‘hats’ – for example when people say ‘put on your thinking cap'. It is believed that because it covers the head, the Hat contains thought and therefor that all your fortune lies beneath your hat! When you ‘put on’ a hat, you operate exclusively in a certain mode of thinking. So when there is a change in thought or of opinion, you change from one hat to another, and because hats can be put on or taken off very easily it encourages people to switch and think in different ways.
"If you want to get ahead.. get a Hat!"
In Story Telling, whether in a movie, theater or stage production, Hats are used to define the thought of a character just as much as it is used as a costume accessory to denote a certain profession, era, nationality or culture of the Story Time. Hats have Power.. it can change you into someone else! As the Mad Hatter said: "The absolute best way to travel is by Hat" - you go wherever your thoughts take you!
"I love the Drama of a Hat!"
